French Provincial Dining Table and Chairs

I am trying to get back on track with  blogging.  LOTS going on around here lately.  In addition to life with kids, husband, dog, school, sports....Artichoke Alley has expanded to include a sister business, The Back Alley!  Artichoke Alley will continue to offer vintage and antique treasures that have been refabbed for today's families while The Back Alley is going to focus on providing furniture, accessories, and salvage items awaiting the makeover opportunities!  We have been very busy trying to get both Artichoke and The Back Alley refreshed and full of irresistable treasures!  We also hope to make some changes to this little blog and our Facebook page..plans in the works!  Thank you for hanging with us as we make all these changes.  THANKS!

With all that being said, I thought I'd share one of our recent projects. This table and chair set was divine in it's time but...as the gold velvet upholstery and gold flecks indicated, it was time for a make over!

After removing the cushions, the whole set got a good scrubbing.  I then primed twice and painted the whole set in a gorgeous cream that was a mix of several almost empty cans of cream, taupe, and whites.  The color of the paint is not too far off from the original (MINUS the gold flecks) but makes everything looks fresh, clean, and ready for a whole new life!

Although I loved the color, I wanted to add a very light antique glazing for some extra depth.  I kept it light and mostly just let it settle in the cracks and crevices and slighter alter the color in some of the high spots.  And to finish it off, I used polycrylic on the table top for extra strength and portection.

Then it was time to tackle those gold babies...Not too long ago I found a bolt of Waverly linen fabric that is very traditional and beautiful; the perfect compliment to this French Provincial set!

I seriously debated on keeping this one!

Have a fabulous day!

Nimbus cloud table and Tremaeu mirror

Mirror mirror on the wall.....what color would you like to be, after all?  I painted this mirror black, dark gray, cream, and finally decided to pair it with this sofa table and finish them in the color of choice for one of my favorite customers, Kamela.  She chose Nimbus Cloud for her vanity (blog with pics coming soon) and it was just so fresh and clean I thought it would be perfect for these two as well.

With a good sanding, two good coats of primer, two good coats of Nimbus Cloud, a heavy application of wax, new hardware, and....yellow chevron fabric lining the drawers-yum, they are done!

They have a much more modern feel than I usually do but, I love how clean and fresh they are.

Have a fantastic Tuesday!

Silk Damask and balloon chairs

When they put these chairs on stage at the last auction my first thought was "if I bring home more chairs, my husband will kill me!" but that was shortly followed by, "those could be SO beautiful!".  The bidding started and my hand shot up!  It was totally uncontrollable and, honestly, there weren't too many others that saw the obvious potential of these beauties!
They were Uuugly (notice the capital) and they got much worse before they got better!  As we started ripping into them, dirt or decomposed filling, just plain nastiness, started pouring out.  I had enlisted the help of my sister but pretty soon she was bowing out!

Yes, that is my kitchen floor....I had NO idea this was going to be such a nasty job!  I knew I didn't want to think of where all that red velvet had  been before my kitchen but, then the grossness behind the velvet was almost more than my sister could take!  We moved outside VERY soon after this picture was taken.

Once they were all taken apart, sanded, and primed, they got a couple coats of heirloom white.  I didn't want to distress them but I did want to add a little depth to the pretty but plain cream so I very slightly glazed them with a beeswax and stain combination.  It adds just a little shine, smells great and is easy to mix the stain into to give the look of antiquing.

Then the really hard part started.  I thought these would be a very easy upholstery job but, they WEREN'T!  In fact, after starting on one, I got so frustrated that I left them sitting in the living room for several days.   I usually don't do projects in the living room (kitchen - yes but living room - no) because there is just too great a chance for dogs, kids, husbands, etc to mess with my project and besides, it's not really fair for my projects to take over the entire house, yard, and garage too is it?  Anyway,  I needed the TV's distraction to actually get these done and when they were finally finished, I was SO glad.

I was so glad in fact, that I loaded them up and took them to the booth so that no one in my house would touch them (or "look" at them with sticky fingers, or sniff them with drooling lips...).  Just as I was unloading them I realized I had not taken after pictures so, I took some in the parking lot!  Not the best after pictures for such beautiful chairs but, better than nothing!

Why is it that the "easy" projects are always the killers?!?!

Here they are from start to finish!

I'm so glad I got these chairs that night and that I was able to make them beautiful again. Oh, and that night I came home from the auction with 12 new chairs......Handsome Hubby is convinced (more than ever) that I have a chair problem!  I love the idea of having a great place to sit!

Have a great day!

Farm fresh green desk

This little desk has now gone to live with Rebecca and Jack!  Thanks!

Sabrina purchased this little pine desk a while back with great plans for her nephew.  Unfortunately he decided it wasn't quite what he wanted but, his loss was my gain!!  It ended up in my garage and on my quest to clean things out this week, it was first on the project hit list!

As most of our regular followers know, I happily live in Alabama but LOVE when we spend time on our ranch in Texas!  I love the smell of the grass, the wide open spaces, and the freshness of country living.  The kids and I are planning our summer vacation and we are quickly moving towards loading up for the ranch.  With that in mind....Sabrina's little desk got a fresh country makeover!

I started by priming it and then giving it three quick coats of this fresh green I found on the Ooops! cart at Lowe's not too  long ago.  When everything was dry, the green was a little brighter than I anticipated and the white wooden knobs were awfully stark too.  All was quickly remedied with a little distressing and a coat of dark wax.  When the wax started to dry I gave it a quick buff and then lined the drawers with some fancy fun wrapping paper.

Now it was time for a chair.  This little cane chair was in a group of chairs I purchased at my favorite auction several months back.  Remember, I am on the quest to clean out the garage and everything needs to GO!  I gave the chair two coats of bright white, slightly distressed it and then used the same dark wax to rub it all down.  Perfect!
Again, here in one last shot the before and after:

2 projects down, only 98 (or so) more to go before we head to the ranch!!  I'd better get back to work.....
