On our first day we took a cog wheel train (HERE) to the top of Pike's Peak! 14,000+ feet up the mountain and the air got pretty thin. At the bottom we were in just shirts and jeans and at the top it was 20 below and snowing!!! Needless to say, it was quite an experience.

One little tidbit that keeps coming back to me is that the woman who wrote "America the Beautiful" was inspired on her carriage ride up to the top of this mountain. Yes, I said carriage ride! It was 100 years ago (or so) and she was a teacher in Colorado Springs. She and a few others decided to venture to the top of the mountain to see what they could see. Okay, really?! I like to think that I'm quite capable and willing to try new experiences and I absolutely understand the fascination of the view after a 1 1/2 hour train ride. BUT, I can't imagine having the gumption to get in a carriage, in my layers of long dress, to ride in a horse drawn carriage, up that puppy! Wow! It's amazing to me what the people of yesterday did to settle and develop our country!
Well, I'd better get everyone up and dressed so that we don't spend our whole vacation just hanging out inside. Have a fabulous day!
